A Little Bit of Texas Homecoming Mums History
Homecoming season in Texas is more than just a football game—it's a time-honored tradition celebrated with pride, spirit, and elaborate decorations. At the heart of this festivity is the homecoming mum, a uniquely Texan creation that has evolved over the decades into a dazzling display of school spirit and personal expression.
Origins of the Homecoming Mum Tradition
The tradition of wearing homecoming mums dates back to the early 20th century when students would exchange real flowers—typically chrysanthemums—as a token of affection and support for their date attending the homecoming football game. Over time, these simple floral gifts grew into extravagant displays adorned with ribbons, bells, trinkets, and even LED lights.
Texas Traditions and School Spirit
Texas high schools and their surrounding areas have embraced the homecoming mum tradition as a staple of school pride. Each mum is customized in the school's colors, often reflecting the personality of the wearer. Whether handmade or purchased, these decorative creations have become an essential part of the homecoming experience, symbolizing the excitement and camaraderie of high school life.
From Real Flowers to Ribbon Masterpieces
While the original mums featured real flowers, modern versions often incorporate artificial blooms to ensure they last throughout the festivities. Some still opt for fresh chrysanthemums, holding onto the authenticity of the tradition, but for many, the focus is on elaborate designs rather than the flower itself.
A Tradition That Keeps Growing
What started as a simple floral exchange has turned into one of the most beloved Texas traditions, evolving with each generation. From oversized mums worn proudly around the neck to mini versions attached to wrists and garters, personalized mums for homecoming continue to represent the spirit and creativity of Texas high school students.
Homecoming season wouldn’t be the same without the sparkle, sound, and spectacle of these cherished decorations. Whether passed down through families or creatively designed each year, the homecoming mum tradition remains a proud symbol of Texas school spirit.
